Join Our Board of Directors!

The Board of Directors is the governing body of CIPS NS and as such is responsible for setting direction and policy with full authority over all affairs of the Association.

Eligible members are invested in the Board’s mission to maintain professionalism and ethics within the IT community, as well as in the Board’s ongoing sub-mission to increase membership and to explore ways to maintain and increase CIPS’s value and relevance in today’s world.

 
    • Assists with transition of presidency

    • Performs such duties, and exercises such authority, as may be delegated through the president

    • Functions as an adviser and aide to the President

    • Sometimes an officer of the board.

    • Other special duties as assigned.

    • Participates on the National Membership committee to ensure Nova Scotia is represented

    • Leads formulation of membership plans (e.g. Bulk Membership, lower base membership rates, etc.)

    • Tracks and reports on membership status and patterns.

    • Participates on the National Marketing committee and ensures Nova Scotia is represented

    • Leads strategic planning of marketing content and activities to promote CIPS NS and generate membership leads

    • Adds relevant information to the website

    • Facilitates publication of material from directors and other members on website and social media platforms

    • Maintains tools for communication with members

    • Sends out regular communications to members.

    • Advocates for and spreads awareness of the official positions taken by CIPS

    • Identifies issues which are provincial in scope on which CIPS NS should develop a position

    • Oversees the development of such positions.

    • Participates in meetings

    • Contributes to goals and initiatives of organization

    • Other special duties as assigned.

Board Responsibilities

  • Attend all CIPS NS meetings

  • Participate in meetings and events

  • Voices opinions and advocates for CIPS mission and values

  • Attend training sessions

  • Use professional skills—for example: legal, accounting, marketing—for the betterment of the organization

  • Read the information sent/given and stay informed on relevant topics

  • Understand financial matters

  • Understand the role of the Board

 

About the Executive Committee

The Executive Committee (which consists of the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the Association, as well as for carrying out the instructions and directions of the Board.

    • Represents the Association in public

    • Speaks on behalf of the Board

    • When available, presides as Chairman over all meetings of the association, Board, and Executive Committee

    • Supervises the affairs of the association

    • Responsible for enforcing the Bylaws

    • Carries out orders and resolutions of the Board, chairs Discipline Committee during a process

    • May be the National Board Representative.

    • Steps in for President when needed

    • Chairs Discipline Committee as needed*

    • Other duties as delegated by President

    • Vice-President is a 3-year commitment: Vice President, President, and Past President.

    * if no Vice President or if the Vice President is not an I.S.P., then the position of Chair of the Discipline Committee will be delegated by the President to a Board Director who has the I.S.P.

    • Responsible for day-to-day affairs of the Association

    • Creates meeting minutes including annual and special meetings

    • Maintains Association records

    • Prepares AGM brochure

    • Picks up mail from Post Office, logs and disburses mail, destroys junk mail

    • Receives, reviews and disburses mail from electronic mail-box (CIPSNS@cips.ca)

    • Keeper of the Seal of the association.

    • Responsible for the organization's accounting and finances

    • Prepares regular financial statements for the board and membership

    • Ensures the books are audited as required by the law or the by-laws.

    • The Treasurer is usually an officer of the board.

 
    • Effectively listen to, collate, and communicate the views of all the students at board meetings to represent and affect positive change for students

    • Enhance communication and student involvement in decision-making processes

    • Keep students informed of developments

    • Help facilitate CIPS NS engagement in student events on campus.

The Student Representative is responsible for representing student interests at all board meetings.
